Search begins for new dean of the College of Arts and Science

Miami University has launched a national search for the next dean of the College of Arts and Science (CAS), partnering with the executive search firm Storbeck Search and Associates. This position is currently held by Chris Makaroff, who has served as dean of CAS for over eight years.

The provost has appointed a search committee which is chaired by Jenny Darroch, dean of the Farmer School of Business. Other members of the search committee include:

  • Andrea Kravats, assistant professor of the Department. of Chemistry and Biochemistry;
  • Rosemary Pennington, associate professor of Media, Journalism, and Film;
  • Tim Melley, professor of English and director of the Humanities Center;
  • Paul Urayama, chair and professor of Physics
  • Vaishali Raval, professor of Psychology
  • Kris Zomchek, director of Personnel Planning and Operations
  • Grace Payne, undergraduate student, Speech Pathology and Audiology and Gerontology double major;
  • Kevin Morrison, graduate student in Chemistry; and
  • Sharon Mitchell, alumni.

The College of Arts and Science (CAS) is the centerpiece of liberal arts education at Miami University and the largest academic division on campus. As such, the college encompasses a rich diversity of disciplinary opportunities and experiences across the humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, languages, mathematics/data science, and interdisciplinary programs.

“I am sincerely grateful for Dean Makaroff’s strong leadership and devoted service to Miami and to the College of Arts and Science,” Provost Elizabeth Mullenix said. “He navigated CAS through unprecedented times in higher education, and I am grateful for his advocacy of the liberal arts and for his collaborative spirit. The next dean of CAS will need to lead the college through a challenging period of change as the university enters its next phase of strategic planning. I am excited to begin this search for our next talented leader.”
