Three career and internship fairs set for fall semester

Miami University will host three career fairs during the fall of 2023, headlined by the Fall Career and Internship Fair on Wednesday, Sept. 27, from 1-5 p.m. in Millett Hall.

The Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Career and Internship Fair will take place the next day, Thursday, Sept. 28, from 1-5 p.m. in Millett Hall. The Sports Career Exploration and Networking Expo (SCENE) rounds out this fall’s offerings, happening on Wednesday, Oct. 4 from 2-4:30 p.m. in Millett Hall.

“We are excited to welcome over 300 employers to Millett Hall this fall career fair season,” said Jennifer Benz, the assistant vice president of the Center for Career Exploration and Success. “These employers are hiring for many different full-time and internship positions. We encourage Miami students of all majors to attend a career fair this fall.”

Designed for all majors, Sept. 27’s Fall Career and Internship Fair will feature employers from a wide variety of sectors, including finance, health care, information and technology, government, nonprofit, and marketing. A sample of the organizations confirmed to appear include presenting sponsor Medpace, Cardinal Health, Cumulus Media, Deloitte, Eli Lilly and Company, Fischer Homes, GE Aerospace, Honda, KeyBank, Kroger, National Youth Advocate Program, OhioHealth, the Ohio Departments of Development and Public Safety, Pepsi, RSM, and Talbert House.

Intel, ADM, American Axle & Manufacturing, Forge Biologics, and the Ohio Departments of Agriculture and Natural Resources are the among the companies set to participate in Sept. 28’s STEM Career and Internship Fair. The Cincinnati Bengals, the Columbus Blue Jackets, and FC Cincinnati are among the attendees of October 4’s Sports Career Exploration and Networking Expo.

At all three career fairs, students will have the opportunity to speak with employer representatives, gain insight into career opportunities, and distribute copies of their resumes. Many employers hire for full-time roles and summer internships during the fall, using university career fairs as a key way to identify candidates to later interview. Some participating organizations will offer next-day interviews following Sept. 27’s Fall Career and Internship Fair and Sept. 28’s STEM Career and Internship Fair.

Benz noted that students who complete an internship while in college can launch themselves into post-graduate success.

“I firmly believe that completing an internship is one of the highest-impact experiences a Miami student can have to become career ready,” Benz said. “Look for an internship earlier than you think, generally during the fall for a summer internship. Ensure you have an attention-grabbing resume and practice your interviewing skills before you attend one of our fall career fairs. Remember that communication, problem solving, teamwork, and cultural competency are universal skills that appeal to any employer. If you showcase these skills, you will land your dream internship.”

Ahead of the career fairs, the Center for Career Exploration and Success will host its JCPenney Suit-Up Event on Sunday, Sept. 24, from 4-7 p.m. at the Northgate JCPenney. Miami students, alumni, faculty, and staff can take advantage of this event to refresh their professional wardrobes at bargain prices. Free transportation is available for students on the Oxford campus, with buses leaving every 45 minutes from the corner of E. Spring Street and Maple Street. Individuals who cannot attend the in-person event can take advantage of its discounts through JCPenney Suit-Up Online.

In fall 2022, 4,239 Miami students connected with 329 employers across three career fairs. The 329 unique employers who participated in Miami’s offerings was more than double its peers’ average of 150 employers.
