Miami University trustees approve revisions to operating budget, new degree programs

The Miami University Board of Trustees approved new degree programs and made revisions to the university’s fiscal year 2022-23 operating budget during its regular meeting on Friday, Dec. 9.

Miami University President Gregory Crawford provided an update on sustainability efforts on campus, highlighting the progress made toward achieving the goals of the Presidents’ Climate Leadership Commitments (PCLC). He also shared with the board recent faculty and staff accomplishments, as well as provided a look into how Miami faculty live the teacher-scholar model.

“Our teacher-scholar model is very unique,” Crawford said. “Every university does an aspect of this, but Miami does it at scale. Our most accomplished faculty members teach at every level, bringing their research into the classroom and making students a part of the experiment and pedagogy. So many tangible outcomes come about because of the teacher-scholar model. Our students graduate and evolve as leader-learners; they take the teacher-scholar model and get out there - they lead and learn.”

During the meeting, the board authorized Miami’s administration to replace its outdated enterprise resource planning (ERP) system. An ERP system is a platform that allows an organization to manage day-to-day business processes and operations, including human resources and payroll, finance and budgeting, and student information, billing, and aid.

The university last replaced its ERP system in 1999 with the Ellucian-Banner ERP, which was initially developed in 1992. After a thorough market assessment and request for proposal process, the university determined that Workday is the most developed and broadly implemented ERP available to colleges and universities.

The board also authorized revisions to the university’s fiscal year 2022-23 budget, which was originally approved at the June 24 meeting, due to higher than anticipated compensation expenses in the academic units on Miami’s Oxford campus. Instructional revenues for Miami’s Regional campuses were less than budgeted.

The Oxford campus and the Regional campuses will draw from their carry forward reserves to fund the revisions. Trustees approved the establishment of:

  • A degree in Music Composition, Bachelor of Music within the College of Creative Arts.
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Cybersecurity within the College of Engineering and Computing.

Trustees also:

  • Reappointed Jeff Pegues for a second three-year term as a national trustee.
  • Approved three professor emeritus/a and five administrator emeritus/a.
  • Approved the awarding of honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degrees to Stephanie Byrd ’81, Nina Leigh Krueger ’83, and David Dauch ’86.
  • Accepted the Committee for Naming Campus Facilities’ recommendation for naming of the Connie Micatrotto Multi-Bed Skills Lab and the Witham-Casner Speech Lab located in the new Clinical Health Sciences and Wellness Facility on the Oxford campus; the Linda Crumb Bresnan Faculty/Staff Office in honor of Aunt Betty Lou located in University Hall on the Hamilton campus.
  • Approved the Annual Report of Remedial Education at Miami and directed the provost and executive vice president to submit the report to the Ohio Department of Higher Education.
