At Miami, research opportunities are everywhere. Each year, more than 2,000 Miami students work with professors on funded research. It doesn't matter if your passion is art, music, public service, biology, or psychology, we have a research program that will work for you.

Consider the benefits

Conducting research can help you do the following:

  • Work with professionals in your field of study
  • Form relationships with people through the research process
  • Take classroom knowledge and put it to practical use
  • Get class credits outside of class
  • Gain public recognition for your work

Consider the possibilities

Whether on campus in Oxford or halfway around the world, you can join the thousands of Miami students engaged in exciting activities that range from painting murals in an urban neighborhood to plant identification for the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma to working towards medical breakthroughs. You might even find yourself co-authoring published research papers and presenting findings at professional conferences. At Miami, we offer so many ways to learn beyond the classroom. Discover how undergraduate research can open doors for you!

Research Opportunities

The following programs are just a few of the undergraduate research opportunities sponsored by Miami's Office for the Advancement of Research and Scholarship (OARS).

  • First Year Research Experience (FYRE)
The FYRE program recognizes the importance of establishing early contact with faculty mentors. It facilitates interaction, networking, and socializing during the learning process.
  • Undergraduate Research Award (URA)
This program encourages all enrolled full-time undergraduates to initiate and carry out small-scale, independent research or creative projects in any discipline.
  • Doctoral-Undergraduate Opportunity Scholarship (DUOS)
DUOS provides the opportunity for undergraduates to work with and learn from graduate students while conducting research under the supervision of a faculty member.
  • Undergraduate Summer Scholars (USS)
A nine-week summer program, USS enables sophomores and juniors to do research or other creative activities in the summer with the supervision of an individual faculty mentor.
  • Undergraduate Presentation Awards (UPA)
This award assists students in presenting the results of their independent research or independent creative activities at professional conferences and meetings.
Because discovery-based learning is integral to the Miami Experience, additional research opportunities are available through academic divisions and departments. Contact your academic adviser to learn more.
