What public access for computing is available to students?

Students on campus have access to more than 1,000 computers in 18 computer labs and numerous classrooms for a 16:1 student/computer ratio.

Additionally, Miami's campus-wide wireless network service allows students with wireless-enabled laptops to connect to Miami's network in any building and many popular outdoor areas on campus.

Does the campus provide institutional email accounts for all students and use email as an official medium of communication?

All students are granted a Miami email account and receive their email address during Summer Orientation. Students are strongly encouraged to check their Miami email account regularly, as many important university communications are sent via email.

Does the campus provide and support electronic space for personal student web pages?

Miami allows and supports personal web pages by providing all students with file server space that can be used to publish web pages and by providing training on web development topics through workshops and computer-based training modules. The search function available from the university's homepage as well as that available from the myMiami site provides easy access to contact information for any member of the university community. You can also find this information in the Miami Directory.

What social activities and services are available online?

Information on events, social activities, and services can be obtained from the following sources:

  • University Calendar—Prominently linked from the university homepage, this calendar lists university events and deadlines. It also drives the "Today's Events" feature on the myMiami site.
  • Living at Miami—This link on the university homepage includes access to information about such topics as housing and dining, health and safety, student organizations and activities, transportation and parking, and the city of Oxford and outlying areas.
  • Student Affairs—The Division of Student Affairs provides many opportunities for service, learning, and fun through offices such as Student Activities, Office of Diversity Affairs, and the Office of Community Engagement and Service.
  • AfterDark—This program provides students with free activities, events, and movies every Friday night at the Shriver Center. Programming, which changes weekly, is sponsored by campus organizations and faculty.
  • Miami RedHawks Athletics—RedHawk fans can access the latest information about Miami sporting events.
  • WMUB—Tune into this university-owned NPR station for the best in Public Radio broadcasting—now with podcasts.
  • WMSR—This cable and carrier-current radio station is operated entirely by Miami students.
  • The Miami Student—Published twice weekly, the Student is Miami's official student newspaper.
  • The Miami University Report—Published weekly, the Report is a newspaper for faculty and staff.

Are there websites for student organizations and clubs?

The Office of Student Activities and Organization Leadership provides access to a comprehensive directory of student organizations. Many of these organizations have their own websites, which can be accessed from the student organization directory. There are over 300 registered student organizations in categories such as career-related, religious, sports, Greek, cultural, service, and honorary. The Office of Greek Affairs contains specific information about the Greek community at Miami University.

Does the campus make available online discussion forums or bulletin boards for un-moderated use?

The university provides several online forums, including listservs and Blackboard. Any faculty member can create a discussion board for use in their class. In addition, any group on campus can request a listserv or Blackboard organization site that would enable them to communicate with their members.

What technology-supported career-planning services are available to students?

The Office of Career Services provides extensive career and job-search information and numerous links to related sites, including CareerSearch, a powerful online database of more than 2 million employers. Students registering with the Office of Career Services are automatically added to a candidate database, from which prospective employers select candidates for interviews. On-campus interviews are managed online using an in-house system.

The Career Exploration and Testing Center (CETC) offers two web-based career self-assessments, Discover and eChoices. These programs allow students to identify their interests, abilities, and values as they relate to careers. Students can then use this information to explore careers or majors that represent a good fit.
