Are students required to purchase their own computer equipment and hardware? |
In general, students are strongly encouragedbut not requiredto have a personally owned computer. Miami also strongly recommends that students have Microsoft Office. Some academic disciplines do have more specific computer/software requirements. Students should check with the department of their major for advice.
Most students do bring their own computer, and the vast majority are choosing laptops over desktops. In fact, the University strongly recommends a laptop computer unless a student has a special need or preference for a desktop computer.
For students who will be purchasing a new computer, Miami recommends purchasing a laptop through the "Miami Notebook" program. This program allows students to purchase a high quality laptop computer at a discounted price, thanks to special volume pricing arrangements with the vendors. Additionally, Miami Notebooks come with the software needed to connect to Miami's network pre-installed. For more information, visit www.muohio.edu/miaminotebook.

- Miami's contract with Microsoft allows students to purchase many Microsoft products at significantly reduced prices. (See www.muohio.edu/microsoft.)
- Students living on campus have high-speed Internet access through the University network. For students living off campus in the Oxford Time Warner service area, the University provides discounted monthly rates for Road Runner high-speed Internet access.
- Miami provides access to more than 1,000 computers through general and departmental labs, many of which include specialized, discipline-specific software.
