Daryl Baldwin, director of the Myaamia Project at Miami, will present “Language is Life: Miami Language and Cul- Baldwin, a member of the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma, has spent the past 10 years working with the Miamis developing culture- and language-based educational materials and programs. He is co-author of the first comprehensive dictionary on the Miami language - a centuries-old language that hasn't been spoken conversationally in more than 45 years. His talk will explore the social, political and cultural issues surrounding language reclamation. The Myaamia Project is a joint venture between the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma and Miami University to preserve, promote and research Miami Nation history, culture and language. Baldwin's talk is co-sponsored by the Center for American and World Cultures, the Center for Writing Excellence and the Myaamia Project. For more information, contact the CAWC at 9-8309. |
