First Gulf War inspires 'In the Heart of America,' opening Oct. 26 |

“In the Heart of America,” a production of the department of theatre, opens at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, in Studio 88, Center for Performing Arts. Additional performances are at 8 p.m. Oct. 27, 28 and 29 and at 2 p.m. Oct. 29 and 30. The play, written by Kentucky native Naomi Wallace in 1995, centers on a young woman's search for the circumstances surrounding the death of her brother, an American soldier killed in the first Gulf War. Amy Foster, a Miami graduate student in theatre, directs. Wallace is a graduate of the Iowa Playwrights Workshop and in 1999 was named recipient of a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, popularly known as the “genius grant.” She also is a published poet and wrote the screenplay for the independent film “Lawn Dogs.” Tickets to the Miami production are $6 for students and youth, $8 for senior citizens and $9 for the general public.
