Daughter of Desmond Tutu to speak

The Rev. Mpho Tutu, a prominent advocate for Africa, women's issues and greater action on AIDS will speak at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19, at the Shriver Center Heritage Room.

Tutu is a member of the board of directors of Global AIDS Alliance and clergy resident at Christ Church in Alexandria, Va. She is a strong backer of a bill pending in the U.S. Senate that would help countries address the needs of children orphaned by AIDS.

“The AIDS crisis requires much of us as caring, compassionate people, and it is the moral challenge of our time. I also want to share the hope I feel, based on the fact that Africans are already working hard to fight AIDS. We must help them meet the basic needs of motherless children left behind by this global health catastrophe,” Tutu says.

Tutu was ordained by her father, Anglican Archbishop Emeritus of Capetown and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Desmond Tutu. The prelate, now 72, played a vital role in the decades-long battle to defeat apartheid in his homeland, South Africa.

Tutu will be joined by David Bryden, communications director of the Global AIDS Alliance based in Washington, D.C. Their brief presentations will be followed by a Q&A session and refreshments. The talk is free and open to the public.
