Kernodle profiled in national publication

Tammy Kernodle (music) is pictured on the cover of the Jan. 15 issue of Black Issues in Higher Education as part of a feature on “Scholars of Note.”

Kernodle joined the faculty in 1997 and is the first African-American woman awarded tenure in the music department. Kernodle studied choral music education and piano as an undergraduate at Virginia State University and received a master’s and doctorate at Ohio State.

She teaches a wide range of classes, from jazz to 19th century violin concertos to the music of Chuck Berry and the Shirelles. Her current research focuses on jazz pianist Mary Lou Williams. She will speak at Lincoln Center this year as part of a Williams celebration and is looking forward to the release of her first book, Soul on Soul: The Life and Music of Mary Lou Williams.
