Author, ecologist Carl Safina to speak Nov. 6

Carl Safina, president of the Blue Ocean Institute, will present “History and Destiny in Ocean Fisheries” at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, in 128 Pearson Hall. His talk is the annual Hefner Lecture.

In his lecture, designed for a general audience, Safina will discuss fish as wildlife, effects of overfishing and fish farming, and the growing consumer-led movement to improve fisheries and restore marine populations.

Safina founded the National Audubon Society’s Living Oceans Program in 1990 and served as the organization’s vice president for ocean conservation. He is a visiting fellow at Yale University, a World Wildlife Fund Senior Fellow and winner of a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Fellowship.

He also received a Pew Fellowship, which he used to research and write Song for the Blue Ocean. It received the Lannan Award for Literature, designation as a New York Times Notable Book and a Los Angeles Times Best Nonfiction Selection.

The nonprofit Blue Ocean Institute, which Safina co-founded in 2003, serves to promote ocean conservation through science, art and literature.

A reception will be held following the lecture in the Hefner Zoology Museum, 100 Upham Hall.
