|
Miami’s debate team took first place at a John Carroll University tournament held Dec. 6-8. The team of Sarah Spring and Lincoln Bisbee won nine consecutive rounds of debate to take first place in the varsity division. More than 70 teams from states including Texas, Virginia, Maryland, Ohio, Michigan and Illinois competed. Bisbee, a junior political science major, was selected as the top speaker from among more than 100 individual competitors. Additionally, Bisbee and Spring, a sophomore Latin major, defeated the University of Chicago in the final round of the tournament. The Miami team of Stephen Solomon and James Cargo completed a 3-3 record in the preliminary rounds. The James Carroll win marks Miami’s second in a major tournament, as the team had a first place finish in Detroit at the end of October. Miami Debate is a division of Miami Forensics, a co-curricular program of the communication department. Ben Voth is director; coaches are Richard Tews and Laurelie Wallace. |
