John Kiss (botany) was elected president of the American Society for Gravitational and Space Biology (ASGSB) at the society’s 2002 meeting held recently in Cape Canaveral, Fla. The society is dedicated to research related to space life sciences through ground-based, or gravitational, and spaceflight research on plants, animals and microbes. The ASGSB includes about 600 members from academia, NASA and international space agencies. Kiss researches gravity perception mechanisms in plants and the role of certain proteins in carrying signals used in gravitropism, the gravity-directed process that directs plant root and shoot growth. He is currently working on a NASA-funded project involving plant development on the International Space Station. Kiss will serve as ASGSB president-elect this year and as president in 2003-2004. |
