Author of Shell Shaker to present reading

Author LeAnne Howe, a member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, will read from her novel Shell Shaker and other writings at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25, in Peabody Hall’s Leonard Theater.

Howe’s 2002 novel Shell Shaker won an American Book Award from the Before Columbus Foundation, which promotes multicultural American literature.

As an American Indian scholar, Howe has presented programs on recruitment and retention of American Indian students at higher education institutions.

Currently, she is consulting with PBS on a film in production in North Carolina. In addition to having taught at Carlton College, Grinnell College, Sinte Gleska University, and Wake Forest, Howe founded WagonBurner Theater Troop, an American Indian theater company that has performed throughout the Midwest and at the National Museum of the American Indian in New York City. In 1998 they spent several weeks in residence at the Center for Complexity Studies, Bucharest, Romania.

Howe’s work is included in the Miami libraries’ Native American Women Playwrights Archive (NAWPA), a collection of original materials by Native women playwrights of the Americas. She also serves on its board of advisers.

Howe’s visit to Miami is supported in part by NAWPA and by the theatre department.
