Kwanzaa celebration to be held Friday |
|
|
Miami’s Kwanzaa celebration will be held at 10 p.m. Friday in the Shriver Center multipurpose room, in conjunction with the After Dark program. A seven-day festival observed in late December and early January, Kwanzaa is inspired by traditional African harvest festivals. The African-American celebration originated in 1966 under the guidance of Maulana Karenga to reaffirm and restore African heritage and culture and to acknowledge seven principles, among them Umoja (unity), Kujichagulia (self-determination) and Kuumba (creativity.) It has grown from being celebrated by a few African Americans to being celebrated by millions. Miami’s celebration, sponsored by the Center for Black Culture and Learning, will include a fashion show, African dance, drumming and presentation of Nguzo Saba, the seven principles. Everyone in the Miami community is invited and encouraged to attend. |
