‘Unrest in Cincinnati: A Panel Discussion on Over-the-Rhine’ to be held today

"Unrest in Cincinnati: A Panel Discussion on Over-the-Rhine " will be held at 7 p.m. today in Room 100 of the art building.

The panel, which will present alternative perspectives on the April unrest and related issues of the Over-the-Rhine community, is sponsored by Miami’s chapter of Amnesty International and the black world studies program.

Speakers include:

• Rev. Damon Lynch III, senior pastor of the New Prospect Baptist Church, president of the Black United Front and a member of Mayor Luken’s Community Action Now committee. He is also a trained community organizer and the former lead organizer and president of United Churches Active in Neighborhoods, which attempts to empower low- and moderate-income people to make decisions that affect their own lives.

• Maria Rogers, staff reporter for CityBeat newspaper, lead reporter on the April unrest in Cincinnati and a Miami graduate.

• Jimmy Heath, photographer, director of the Center for Community Photography. He is a formerly homeless advocate for the homeless and editor of Streetvibes, a newspaper for the homeless published by the Greater Cincinnati Coalition for the Homeless, which reports on issues of homelessness, poverty and social justice.

• Mary Burke, staff member of the Over-the-Rhine Housing Network, a nonprofit housing organization that provides quality, low-income housing. She is a resident of Over-the-Rhine and a tenant of ReSTOC, a nonprofit housing cooperative that rehabilitates buildings to provide quality low-income housing.

The discussion will be facilitated by Thomas Dutton (architecture and interior design), director of the Community Advocacy Center in Over-the-Rhine.
