Public debate: Social Security — to be or not to be privatized? |
|
|
A public debate over the privatization of the Social Security system will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, at 115 Shideler Hall. Presentations will be made by speakers from national organizations that advocate either side of the privatization issue, after which, in a "town hall" style forum, audience members are encouraged to make their own arguments for the resolution of the Social Security dilemma. Norm Bungard of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare will advocate that the United States should avoid risky individual investment accounts while working to avoid the Social Security crisis. Edwin Thompson, president of the Personal Retirement Alliance, will argue that Social Security should allow people to manage their own retirement accounts. The debate is a part of the audience debate forum series sponsored by Miami forensics and of the Spotlight on Aging series sponsored by Scripps Gerontology Center.
