Friday, Aug. 18, "turn-around day" at Miami, means commencement for 721 summer graduates and move-in day for 3,365 first-year students. Whether coming or going, most of the students will have parents in tow, which means an extraordinary influx of visitors to Oxford. This year’s freshman class enters Miami with 63 percent having participated in advanced college study. The middle 50 percent had ACT composite scores of 24 to 28 and 90 percent did volunteer work while in high school. The class includes 9 percent minority students, up from 8 percent last year. Other information: • An estimated 16,200 students, a total that includes about 14,800 undergraduates, are expected on the Oxford campus. Undergraduates are from 48 states and 32 countries. • Monday, Aug. 21, first-year students will begin their university careers at a 1:30 p.m. convocation during which they’ll hear from the author of the book they were assigned to read over summer, The Endurance: Shackleton’s Legendary Antarctic Expedition. After convocation, first-year students will meet in small groups to discuss the book with volunteer faculty, staff and upper-class students. The book’s explorations provide a theme for special programs planned throughout the year. • Tuesday, Aug. 22, classes begin. |
