Miami ‘Palm Courtiers’ featured on holiday recording

Michéle Gingras is producer and performer on "Palm Court Christmas," a recently released compact disc featuring members of the Miami music faculty. Gingras, clarinet, is joined on the disc by colleagues Ron J. Matson, piano and sleigh bells; Eric Pritchard, violin (former faculty); Mary E.M. Harris, viola; Steven Shumway, cello; and William Albin, snare drum.

The "courtiers" perform holiday favorites including "I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas," "Silent Night" and "Winter Wonderland," many in new arrangements made especially for the group by James Carlson.

Gingras said the recording is in the style of salon music, designed to enhance the holiday mood at parties and other special occasions.

Support for the project is from the School of Fine Arts, the department of music and the office for the advancement of scholarship and teaching.
