By Karah Woesner College students and high-school seniors may submit proposals to improve the local or regional environment, raise awareness of environmental issues or add to the collective understanding of the natural world. Deadline for applications is Nov. 1. Previous projects include the purchase of equipment to aid paper recycling, development of educational trails at several schools across the U.S. and studies involving the reduction of coliform levels in wetlands. The GHE was established to honor students who helped in the creation of Biosphere 2000: Protecting Our Global Environment, an introductory environmental sciences college textbook written by Donald Kaufman (zoology) and Cecilia Franz, GHE co-director. More than 300 undergraduates assisted the authors. About 20 students developed case studies that were subsequently revised and incorporated into various chapters, and many other students helped check and update facts, research photos and offered feedback. "Our ultimate goal is for the Global Heritage Foundation to be a lasting testimony to the creative potential of undergraduates," Kaufman said. The third edition of Biosphere 2000 was published recently. Ten percent of its royalties support the GHE. Woesner is a student writer in the news and public information office. |
