Kimball book wins two awards

Jeffrey Kimball (history) has won two awards for his recent book, Nixon’s Vietnam War.

Kimball has been awarded the Robert H. Ferrell Book Prize for the best history of American foreign relations published in 1998 from the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations and the Ohio Academy of History Book Award for “outstanding historical publication” of 1998 by an Ohio author.

Nixon’s Vietnam War (University Press of Kansas) draws from recently declassified sources including the Nixon tapes, National Security Council files of the White House, documents regarding POWs and MIAs, Soviet, East German and Vietnamese documents and interviews with Vietnamese and American policy-makers.
The Ohio Academy of History calls the book an “impressive and elegantly written synthesis.”

“It would be hard to think of the negotiations and the prosecution of the Vietnam War now without this careful analysis of the ways in which psychology interacted with events and Nixon’s use of ‘madman’ threats to intimidate the Vietnamese,” says the academy.

Kimball teaches U.S. foreign policy, peace history, war and society, presidential history and the Vietnam War. In addition to numerous articles on foreign relations, war and peace, he is the editor of To Reason Why: The Debate About the Causes of American Involvement in the Vietnam War (1990). He was a Norwegian Nobel Institute senior research fellow in 1995, and is the former president of the Peace History Society.
