To help Miami during the budget crunch and to not waste energy, faculty and staff are asked to take a little extra time before they leave for Thanksgiving break and turn off equipment in their offices.
Most importantly, says Tony Ferraro, energy management engineer, computers should be turned off, as doing so will save energy and reduce one's security risk as well. Other office equipment including copiers, space heaters, coffee makers, printers and lights should also be turned off.
"We appreciate you taking the time to help reduce the university's energy consumption," says Ferraro.
On a day-to-day basis, employees are reminded that even when they leave their offices for lunch, these tips apply:
* Turn off fluorescent lights when leaving a room for a period of 20 minutes or longer.
* Turn off incandescent bulbs if they're not needed for one minute or longer.
* Turn off your computer overnight, and if you're not using it for an hour or more.
* Turn off your monitor instead of using a screen saver to save more electricity.
