Students design HO scale model trains for auction

Engineering students designed and donated authentic recreations of the Santa Fe SD545 and Canadian Pacific-Holiday Express train lines as Ho scale models for a silent auction to help purchase holiday gifts for children in Butler and Preble counties who are under court protection due to abuse, neglect or abandonment.

Under the direction of Steve Keller, associate professor of paper and chemical engineering, and Doug Troy, professor of computer science & system analysis, students developed, researched, designed and worked together to authentically recreate the models that measure 42" x 70".

A silent auction will be held Nov. 19 - Dec. 2 for the two HO scale model train layouts. Engines and cars, scenery and all accessories, laid out on geographically landscaped Styrofoam bases are included in the silent auction bidding. The auction is sponsored by university advancement and the department of kinesiology and health.

All proceeds from the auction will be donated to the CPAC (Classified Personnel Advisory Committee) Holiday Project.

Bids may be submitted to Beverly Flaig at flaigbj@muohio.edu between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays with minimum bids of $50. To see the models, contact Beverly Flaig for tours.

Holiday Project donations accepted

Miami's Classified Personnel Advisory Committee (CPAC) is also taking direct donations for its 13th Holiday Project benefitting nearly 200 children in foster or protective care in Butler and Preble counties.

Through Dec. 4 tax-deductible donations may be sent to the CPAC Holiday Project, Linda Knowles, IT services, Hoyt Hall. Details are online through CPAC's Web page.

Donations of wrapping paper, new books, board games and sport balls are being accepted at these drop-off locations: dean's office, 577 Mosler Hall, Hamilton; the admissions office, 114 Johnston Hall, Middletown; and the kinesiology and health department office, 106 Phillips Hall, and IT services, 312 Hoyt Hall, Oxford.
