Miami alumnus to work with design initiative

10/20/2008

John Foster, Miami '85, will work with members of the Miami Design Collaborative (MDC) Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 21 and 22. Foster is head of talent and organizational development for IDEO, an international design consultancy firm founded in 1991 in Palo Alto, Calif.

The company is known for its "deep dive" process that was featured on ABC's "Nightline" in 1999. In that episode, IDEO led a team using what is in essence a total immersion process, to rethink and redesign a simple shopping cart in five days.

MDC, led by the School of Fine Arts, brings together students and faculty from across campus in an interdisciplinary approach to team-based design solutions. Foster will work with the group using the "deep dive" process to create a structure for the collaborative.

Foster earned a double bachelor's of arts degree at Miami in organizational communication and psychology and a master's degree at Colorado State University. He has held senior leadership positions at numerous corporations including Citibank, Fidelity Investments and Levi Strauss.

IDEO has more than 550 employees in areas including branding, environmental design, human factors and software engineering. In addition to California, the firm has offices in Chicago, New York City, Boston, London, Munich and Shanghai.

MDC is supported by Miami's Armstrong Institute for Interactive Media Studies (AIMS), a sponsor for Foster's visit.
