Ohio Governor Bob Taft recently appointed Rachel Chase, a senior physics and mathematics major from Westerville, Ohio, as the newest student trustee on Miami University's board of trustees.
Chase, who has a particular interest in pure math, this summer is working on an algebraic topology project supported by an Undergraduate Summer Scholar grant. "It is extraordinarily invigorating to work independently in a field for which one is passionate," said Chase "I am always discovering a new way of thinking."
In addition to her studies and her duties on the board of trustees, Chase is a student court justice and president of Pi Mu Epsilon, a national honorary mathematics society.
She replaces Brian Shroder, whose term expired in February of 2006.
Student members of the board of trustees serve two years. They have no voting power and do not attend executive sessions of the board.
