Five Miami University graduate students organized an exhibition of large-scale works, "Oxford to Oxford," for the Powerhouse Community Arts Center in Oxford, Miss. The exhibition is through the end of September, including Sept. 26 when the University of Mississippi will host the first of three planned presidential debates. During the debate, the Powerhouse will be used as a hospitality venue for journalists.
Participating artists are: Charlie Buckley, painting; Andrew Dailey, painting; Josh Foy, ceramics; Alan Pocaro, printmaking; and Casey Vogt, painting.
Buckley received a BFA from Ole Miss in 2004 and was instrumental in arranging the exhibition, working with Wayne Andrews, director of the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council (the name is derived from novels of famous Oxford, Miss., writer William Faulkner) that is in charge of the Powerhouse. "For a few days at the end of this month, the nation will focus its attention on Oxford and we are happy to have our work there," says Buckley. Some 3,000 members of the media are expected to cover the debate.
Each artist submitted one large-scale work and two smaller works. All have a political theme.
Support for the exhibition is from Miami's Bruce Cochrqne, dean of the Graduate School, James Lentini, dean of the School of Fine Arts and department of art chair dele jegede and Andrews in Mississippi.
The Powerhouse is located at 413 South 14th St. in Oxford, Miss. Hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, visit www.oxfordarts.com/powerhouse.php.
