Miami professor combines art and code in new book

07/11/2008

Processing: Creative Coding and Computational Art
Ira Greenberg is the author of Processing: Creative Coding and Computational Art. Greenberg is associate professor in the department of art and interactive media studies program at Miami University and an affiliate in computer science and systems analysis.

Processing is an open source programming language and environment designed to bridge the gap between programming and art, allowing non-programmers to learn fundamentals as easily as possible and empowering anyone to produce beautiful creations using math patterns. The book is written for artists, designers, creative professionals and students exploring code art, graphic programming and computation aesthetics.

Greenberg's book is one of few discussing the language. He also serves on a processing development team with its inventors, Ben Fry and Casey Reas. Greenberg will host them in visits to Miami in 2008-09 where they will interact with students.

Processing is published by Friends of ED (an Apress company based in Berkeley, Calif.), friendsofed.com.

Greenberg holds a bachelor of fine arts from Cornell University and master's of fine arts from the University of Pennsylvania. He has exhibited his work, consulted within industry and lectured widely throughout his career. His work may be viewed at: www.iragreenberg.com.

Another recent work, part of "Connections," a May exhibition featuring art by Miami faculty and graduate students at the Institute of Art and Design in the Czech Republic, is online at: iragreenberg.com/readingfreedom/.
