Miami student receives Gilman scholarship for study abroad

Miami University senior Tariq Lacy, from Beavercreek, is the recipient of a $5,000 Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. He will use it to participate in the Asian studies program at Kansai Gaidai University in Japan. The Gilman program received 1,659 applications for 700 possible awards for the 2008-2009 academic year.

Lacy, a technical and scientific communication major, also participated in a Summer Intensive Chinese workshop last year with a $3,000 Freeman Award for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA).

The Gilman program provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. It is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education. For more information, go to www.iie/gilman.
