New mission statement, new budget for Miami

06/20/2008

Miami University trustees Friday, June 20, approved a new mission statement for Miami and also adopted an operating budget for the 2008-2009 fiscal year, which starts July 1.

The university's new mission statement develops a theme of "The Engaged University." One of the focal statements is "It (The university) is deeply committed to student success, builds great student and alumni loyalty, and empowers its students, faculty and staff to become engaged citizens who use their knowledge and skills with integrity and compassion to improve the future of our global society."

Trustees passed a $676.9 million operating budget for 2008-2009 that includes a $3 million reduction in ongoing operating costs.

With the 2009 opening of the university's Voice of America Learning Center in West Chester, trustees approved a plan and fee structure for a professional MBA program to be offered beginning in fall 2009.

Reports to trustees included a projection of a large first-year class, of more than 3,500 students; an update on the For Love and Honor campaign; and a tally of IT service hours and expenditures that showed, among other things, that about 62 percent of the department's service was to university-wide projects, and within divisional work, more than 60 percent of staff time spent on projects was devoted to academic affairs.

Provost Jeffery Herbst recognized the 28 faculty and staff who retired this year for their long-time service to Miami.

In other business, trustees also
* appointed Sue Henry, Miami '73, as a national trustee for a three-year term. Henry is an attorney from McLean, Va., who already serves Miami on advisory councils.

* approved the awarding of contracts for high-end audio visual equipment for the new School of Business building not to exceed $2,310,000.

* adopted an administrative fee of .50 percent to be calculated against the previous fiscal year's March 31 value of endowment assets annually and to be paid to the educational and general fund beginning with the current fiscal year.

Board chair Richard Smucker appointed members Kay Geiger and Sue Henry to the board's academic affairs committee.
