Miami University senior art major Samantha Doan is recipient of a 2008 Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award from the International Sculpture Center in Hamilton, N.J.

Works by 12 students were selected as award winners and will be exhibited at the center from Oct. 11 to April 26, 2009. More than 401 students were nominated by faculty at more than 162 art departments at colleges and universities around the world. Doan was nominated by Sara Young, Miami visiting assistant professor of art.

Doan's work, "Home Intervention: The Living Inside" will be exhibited and featured in the October 2008 Sculpture magazine as well as in a fall/winter exhibition catalogue. All winners will be honored at an opening reception Oct. 11 at the center.

Doan describes herself as "a researcher, an observer and a maker of objects imbued with personal histories revealed through performance." In her living sculpture "Home Intervention," she reconstructs a dollhouse on the foundation of a house that is no longer there. The exhibition will include the dollhouse, the dress she wore and footage of her performance. "I create living sculpture by combining autobiographical objects with the gestures of performance," she says. "My work revolves around the tension between the impermanence of performance and the tangibility of objects."

The International Sculpture Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement, creation and understanding of sculpture and its contributions to society. The center sponsors the student achievement awards each year to recognize exceptional young talent. Jurors for the 2008 competition included Mary Ceruti, director of The Sculpture Center in Long Island, N.Y.; Dennis Oppenheim, a New York-based sculptor; and Robert Roesch, chair of sculpture at the Academy of Fine Art in Philadelphia.

Doan, from Oxford, is the daughter of Miami School of Fine Arts associate dean and professor of theatre William Doan and Bonnie Doan.
