Arlene Werts, director, announced that marketing communications has implemented a green policy for paper specified in publications production at Miami. Sheet fed paper must have certification from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and reflect a post-consumer recycled content or non-wood fiber content of at least 10 percent.
FSC is a collaboration by loggers, foresters, environmentalists and sociologists to set international standards on forest management. The FSC name and seal may be used only if the print vendor is also certified. "Because there are so few certified vendors in our area we may not always be able to employ the seal," said Werts, "but we will be purchasing paper responsibly and we are encouraged that many of our current vendors have begun the certification process."
Miami's minimum standard for recycled content is 10 percent post-consumer waste (PCW) or non-wood fiber alternatives (for example, sugar cane, corn stalks, cotton, etc.). "We will specify higher PCW content whenever feasible," added Werts.
