Updated digital collection of McGuffey papers available

05/22/2008

Miami University Libraries announces the completion of a revised and updated digital collection of the letters of William Holmes McGuffey.

Selected letters were first available online in 1998. Approaching the tenth anniversary of the creation of the original online collection, this new, revised and expanded edition includes the entire collection of letters along with text transcripts prepared by Betsy Butler, special collections librarian. It provides a searchable database of the McGuffey Papers housed in the Walter Havighurst Special Collections at Miami University.

William Holmes McGuffey began teaching school at the age of 14. While a professor of ancient languages at Miami University (1826 - 1836), McGuffey was approached to write a series of readers for school children. He was assisted by his brother, Alexander Hamilton McGuffey, who also compiled a speller and had sole responsibility for the Fifth Reader.

Still in print, the McGuffey Readers have sold over 125,000,000 copies.

The McGuffey Papers consist primarily of correspondence sent or received by William Holmes McGuffey between 1826 and 1873, although dates extend from 1814 to 1932.
