Seidel book explores posthumanity

05/15/2008

Inhuman Thoughts: Philosophical Explorations of Posthumanity
Inhuman Thoughts: Philosophical Explorations of Posthumanity, by Asher Seidel, Miami University associate professor of philosophy, was released in April by Lexington Books.

Inhuman Thoughts provides a philosophical exploration of the possibility of increasing the physiological and psychological capacities of humans to the point that they are "no longer biologically, psychologically, or socially human," according to the publisher. "The movement is from the human through the trans-human to the post-human."

Seidel examines speculated examples of post-human forms of life, including indefinitely extended life-span, parallel consciousness, altered perception, asociality, and asexuality.

Inhuman Thoughts is directed at those interested in philosophical questions on human nature and the best life given the possibilities of that nature.

Seidel joined the Miami faculty in 1971. He specializes in metaphysics and epistemology - especially naturalized and social theories - and the philosophy of mind, concentrating on cognitive scientific issues, particularly those arising from artificial intelligence practice and theory.
