Five receive Shoupp Awards for research with industry

05/23/2008

Five Miami faculty have received Shoupp Awards to initiate collaborative research projects with business and industry. The program, sponsored by the office for the advancement of research and scholarship (OARS), supports proposals for projects that are tied to Ohio's Third Frontier project.

The 2008-2009 recipients are:

Catherine Almquist (paper and chemical engineering), "An investigation of beneficial users of industrial waste: pyrolysis of de-inked paper sludge for sorbent/catalyst synthesis," $5,000;

D. Steven Keller (paper and chemical engineering), "Laser mapping of fibrous web density for product development," $5,000;

Padmasiri Ranatunga (engineering technology), "Experimental and numerical techniques for characterization and health monitoring of polymer-matrix composites," $4,858;

Andre Sommer (chemistry and biochemistry), "A handheld chemical identification system using raman spectroscopy at wavelengths greater than 950 nm," $5,000; and

Shouzhong Zou (chemistry and biochemistry), "Spectroscopic and microscopic studies of ionomer-electrode interaction," $5,000.

The Shoupp program now has Phase I and Phase II funding opportunities. Phase I awards, up to $5,000, are to establish collaboration between business and industry; Phase II awards, between $10,000 and $20,000, require a contribution from business or industry matching or exceeding Miami's contribution. A Phase I award must be received and completed before a Phase II award may be applied for.
