Faculty and student art featured in international exhibition

05/01/2008

Thirty-nine works by 19 Miami University art faculty and graduate students are part of "Connections," an exhibition at the Institute of Art and Design (IAD) at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, Czech Republic. The students, all teaching assistants, graduate in May with a master's in fine arts.

The exhibition opens with a reception on Tuesday, May 6, and continues through May 24.

Susan Ewing, Miami Distinguished Professor of Art, is coordinator. Future plans include developing a partnership with IAD for a joint international master's degree program and student and faculty exchanges, among other initiatives. IAD was established in 2004 and is one of the most progressive university institutions in the Czech Republic focusing on arts and design.

Artwork will be exhibited in two spaces, University Gallery, in the center of Pilsen; and Gallery Above the Stairs at the university campus. The exhibition is part of the Pilsen Liberation Festival, founded in 2005 to commemorate the anniversary of the liberation of the city of Pilsen by American troops at the end of World War II in Europe.

"The 'Connections' exhibit will serve as an opportunity to showcase the great art of our faculty and to further bridge the connection between Miami and the IAD," says James Lentini, dean of the School of Fine Arts, who will be traveling with the exhibiting artists to Pilsen. "International collaborations like this help to further our mission by connecting our students and faculty to an increasingly global world of education and the arts."

Miami faculty and students participating, in addition to Ewing, include: Andrew Au (Miami Middletown), Joomi Chung, Larry Winston Collins, Thomas Effler, Margaret "Peg" Faimon, Tracy Featherstone, Ira Greenberg (art and interactive media studies), dele jegede (art department chair), E. James Killy (emeritus), Matthew Litteken, Edward Montgomery (Miami Hamilton), Ellen Jean Price, Ralph Raunft, Dana Saulnier, Dennis Tobin, Roscoe Wilson (Miami Hamilton), Jon Yamashiro, Sara Young and students Alyssa Feather, Tadashi Koizumi, Brent Payne, Alan Pocaro and Kelly Severtson.
