"Uzbekistan at the Crossroads" Symposium April 26

"Uzbekistan at the Crossroads," a symposium on the history and current state of Uzbekistan, will be held 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 26, in 212 MacMillan Hall at Miami University. The symposium coincides with a weeklong residency of the Ilkhom Theatre Company at Miami and is part of a series of events related to Uzbekistan presented by the Central Eurasian Studies Society (CESS) and Havighurst Center for Russian and Post-Soviet Studies.

Symposium speakers include Ron Sela, assistant professor of Central Eurasian studies at Indiana University; Jeff Sahadeo, assistant professor of European and Russian studies and political science at Carleton University; Marianne Kamp, associate professor of history at the University of Wyoming; Laura Adams, lecturer on sociology at Harvard University; and John Schoberlein, director of the program on Central Asia and the Caucasus at Harvard University.
The symposium is free and open to the public.

Uzbekistan's Ilkhom Theatre Company, on a five-city U.S. tour, will perform "Ecstasy with the Pomegranate" at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at Gates-Abegglen Theatre, part of Miami's Performing Arts Series. The multimedia dance and theatre production, directed by Mark Weil, will be performed in Russian with English surtitles.

The Ilkhom Theatre Company's residency is sponsored by the Havighurst Center with support from the Performing Arts Series, film studies program and CESS.
