WMUB-FM, the public radio service of Miami University, will air a series of student-produced news features in the coming week. Nine Miami seniors took on the topic of immigration as a class project in a collaboration between the station and Miami's journalism program.
The series of three stories, focusing on the topic, "Immigration in Southwest Ohio" will air on WMUB, NPR @ 88.5 FM Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (4/22-4/24) during local segments of NPR's "Morning Edition" and "All Things Considered."
The soon-to-graduate Miami seniors interviewed legal immigrants and undocumented workers, law enforcement officials, education leaders and clergy members to find out what life was like for immigrants in the Miami Valley.
The students produced these feature-length stories with the assistance of WMUB news director, Gary Scott and Miami journalism instructor, Joe Sampson.
Part one of the series tells us about the challenges facing graduating high school seniors who speak English as a second language. Part two covers the challenges of undocumented workers on their path to citizenship. Part three examines the newly-gained immigration enforcement powers of the Butler County Sheriff's Office.
The stories will air each day (Tue, Wed, Thu) at 5:34 a.m., 7:34 a.m. and 5:44 p.m. They also will be available for online listening from the station website at: www.wmub.org
