Miami art students recognized

04/17/2008

"Self Portrait (Dumb Blond)," by Whitney Sage is included in the exhibition, "Rites of Passage."
Four Miami University art students recently achieved honors. Liz Beard, Whitney Sage and Joanna Lord, all seniors, had paintings accepted in "Rites of Passage," an exhibition at Cincinnati's Manifest Gallery that opens with a reception 6-9 p.m. Friday, April 18.

Todd King, a senior graphic design major, won first place in the American Institute of Graphic Arts Portfolio Review, held April 12 at the Art Academy in Cincinnati. Participants came from all regional design programs and judging is by area professionals.

"Rites of Passage," an exhibition resulting from a nationwide call to graduating fine arts students, features 22 works by 11 artists from eight college programs, selected from 360 submissions nationwide.

"I got involved in the contest because of professor Dana Saulnier," said exhibitor Sage. "He really encouraged students to enter their works... his compassion and enthusiasm is mainly why I entered the 'Rites of Passage' exhibition."

Manifest Gallery is located at 2727 Woodburn Ave. in Cincinnati. The April 18 reception is free and open to the public. The exhibition runs through May 23. For more information, call (513) 861-3638 or visit www.manifestgallery.org.
