Miami voice students win awards at competition

Eleven Miami University voice students won awards at the Ohio chapter competition of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) held at Bowling Green State University April 12. Eighteen students of Alison Acord, Ben Smolder and Mari Opatz-Muni participated in the competition.

Students, their award and category included:

• First place: Michael Pegher, advanced college men; and Grace Kim, senior college women.

• Second place: Mark Rysdon, advanced college men; Sean Lair, junior college men; Sean Hurley, junior college men; Phillip Jennings, sophomore college men; and Mark Aiken, freshman college men.

• Third place: Antonia Tamer, sophomore college women; and Emily Moses, freshman college women.

• Fourth place: Steve Mullan, upper college men and women musical theatre; and Bryn Vertesi, advanced college women.

Other students who participated were Carly Jones, Wade Lacy, Wyco ter Haar, Alicia Falcon, Amanda Cook, Emily Lane and Roy Eikelberry. In addition, Acord was elected to the executive board of the NATS Buckeye chapter.

More than 200 students from 15 universities and conservatories across Ohio participated in the competition.
