Barbara Jones named new VP for student affairs

03/31/2008

Barbara Jones
Miami University has named Dr. Barbara Jones as the new vice president for student affairs, beginning August 1. Jones is now assistant chancellor for student affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, a position she has held since 2000.

In her new role at Miami, Jones will continue the division's emphasis on student success through active engagement and leadership opportunities in an inclusive and welcoming environment. Student affairs encompasses residence life, academic support, student activities, health and counseling, student conduct, Greek life, career services, university-Miami tribe relations and more. Jones will play a key role in shaping the process for the planned Bicentennial Student Center, the sophomore residency implementation and continued efforts to reduce high risk behavior among students. She will oversee approximately 190 staff members.

At UW-Whitewater, Jones oversees the direction and implementation of the dean of student life office, university health and counseling services, career center, residence life, financial aid, athletic facilities, Center for Students with Disabilities and more. Under her supervision UW-Whitewater completed a major addition and renovation to its university center. She leads a staff of 180.

"With Dr. Jones' wide range of experiences, she is just the right person to continue our focus on creating an integrated web of learning and living experiences for all students," said David Hodge, Miami University president. "I look forward to her leadership in elevating our exemplary program of student experiences and success to one that sets the standard nationally."

Prior to this position, Jones served as associate vice president for student affairs at Ball State University and director of student activities and organizations at Minnesota State University-Mankato. She served as president of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators in 2006-2007 and has made numerous presentations to association professionals.

Jones received her doctorate in educational administration from the University of Minnesota and a master's in college student personnel administration and bachelor's in education, both from Indiana University.

She replaces Dr. Richard Nault, who will retire June 30.
