Trustees freeze in-state tuition;
Out-of-state students to pay six percent more

02/08/2008

Tuition and general fees for Ohio students at Miami University will remain unchanged for 2008-2009, consistent with the state's zero percent increase mandate, but university trustees in a meeting today voted to raise out-of-state tuition by 6 percent, to $25,306.

During the 2008-2009 school year, no undergraduate Ohio student at Miami in Oxford will pay more than $11,443 in tuition. Miami is committed to providing affordable access to high quality education to all Ohio students, and through its Miami Grants program nearly 60 percent of entering Ohio students will pay less than the maximum.

In-state graduate students will also pay the same as last year, while out-of-state graduate students will see a 6 percent increase in the out-of-state surcharge, bringing their tuition to $24,898.

Ohio students at Miami's campuses in Middletown and Hamilton will see no increase, with tuition remaining at $2,226 for lower division and $3,342 for upper division students.

Trustees heard a report of a proposed Bicentennial Student Center for the Oxford campus. A Bicentennial Student Center Committee held forums, visited other universities and met with design experts in recent months to gauge the best programs to offer at such a center and to help determine where on campus a center might be located.

More information will be discussed at the April and June trustee meetings.

Also in today's meeting, trustees voted to hire David K. Creamer as vice president for finance and business services and treasurer, effective June 1. Creamer is currently senior vice president for administration at Kent State University.

In other action, trustees

• approved promotion and/or tenure for 39 faculty members, effective July 1.
• passed numerous fees for services, from graduation fees to parking fines, with most remaining unchanged.
• heard a report that the For Love and Honor campaign has reached $326 million.
• approved recommendations by the committee on naming of campus facilities, and
• approved the rank of professor emeritus for two faculty members.

Board chair Richard Smucker appointed trustees to the standing committees of finance and audit and academic affairs and to the investment subcommittee.
