"We are pleased that Gov. Strickland highlighted Miami University when he discussed his vision for the new University System of Ohio in Wednesday's State of the State address," said Miami President David Hodge. This system, which allows Ohio's public universities and colleges to maintain their unique character and strengths, unites them through a common mission that will play a key role in reshaping the future of the state.
Over the past year, a tremendous amount of work has been done to build this system. The Governor highlighted the new collaboration between Miami and Sinclair Community College as one of the ways the state will better utilize resources to achieve its goal of having high-quality associate and bachelor's degrees available within 30 miles of every Ohioan.
"We applaud Gov. Strickland and Chancellor Fingerhut on their plans for the University System of Ohio, and we are proud to have been singled out as an early example of its implementation," said Miami Middletown Dean Kelly Cowan.
"We are delving into the details with Cincinnati State Technical and Community College - our friends to the south - and Sinclair's campus in Mason - our friends to the east," said Miami Hamilton Dean Daniel Hall.
The governor also proposed an initiative called Seniors to Sophomores, which builds on Ohio's existing Post Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) program that allows qualified high-school students to take college courses simultaneously for high-school and college credit. All three Miami campuses enroll students in the PSEO program.
"This is exciting for the future of Ohio," said Hodge. "We look forward to contributing to Ohio's future by bringing a high quality education to more Ohio families and helping them realize an improved quality of life."
