Miami University is ranked number eight on the Peace Corps' top 25 list for medium-sized schools, with 42 alumni currently serving as volunteers - up from 34 volunteers and 12th place in 2007. Since the Peace Corps' inception in 1961, 782 Miami alumni have joined the ranks, making the university the No. 44 producer of volunteers for all time.
The increase in Miami alumni is attributed partly to the "outstanding support from on-campus and local returned Peace Corps volunteers who help get the word out, as well as awareness support from residential life services," said Christine Torres, Peace Corps public affairs specialist.
Peace Corps volunteers currently serving in the field are at a 37-year high. Peace Corps volunteers represent 1,192 institutions of higher learning and serve in 74 countries overseas, according to Peace Corps director Ron Tschetter.
"The caliber of student at Miami, both academically and personally, is such a great fit for Peace Corps, which is a competitive program," said Torres.
Miami tied for eighth place with Boston College and Georgetown University. Other Ohio schools in the top 25 are Oberlin College, 11th in the small schools category with 18 alumni volunteers, and Ohio State University, third in the graduate school category with 14 volunteers.
