Young Painters Competition winner to be announced Jan. 18

Winners in the 2008 Young Painters Competition will be announced at a reception Friday, Jan. 18, at Hiestand Galleries, School of Fine Arts. Awards include the $10,000 William (Miami '36) and Dorothy Yeck purchase award, as well as second- and third-place awards.

Omar Chacon, the 2007 winner, will speak at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, in Room 100 of the art building. Peter Plagens, juror for the 2008 competition, will speak at 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18. A reception for the 10 finalists begins at 5:15 p.m. and the winner will be announced at 5:45 p.m.

Plagens, based in New York, is a Dayton native who also is an author, artist, educator and art critic for Newsweek magazine.

Works by the 2008 finalists and 2007 winner have been exhibited since Dec. 13 at the Hiestand Galleries. For the 2008 competition, there were more than 100 entries from 32 states.
