Miami again named to Kiplinger's
"100 Best Values in Public Colleges"

01/08/2008

Miami University is included as one of the "100 Best Values in Public Colleges" by Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine. The February 2008 issue ranks Miami as the top bargain in Ohio and 31st nationally, up seven spots from 2007.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of Florida and the University of Virginia top the list.

"We know what a significant investment a college education is for families and believe that the Kiplinger ranking speaks to Miami University's outstanding academic quality, high-caliber students and tremendous value," said Laurie Koehler, director of admission. "The personalized education provided to our students is reflected in their exceptional retention and graduation rates," she said.

Editors started with data from a list of 500 public four-year colleges and universities. They narrowed their list to 120 schools based on academic quality measures of entrance exam scores of the 2007 freshman class, admission rates, freshman retention rates, student-faculty ratios and graduation rates. They then ranked schools on cost measures: total cost overall, the average cost for students with and without need after subtracting grants (but not loans), average percentage of need met by aid and the average amount of debt a student accumulates before graduation.

Editors said to determine academic strength and affordability, about two-thirds of the scoring formula was based on quality and one-third on cost.

Ohio State was the only other Ohio school listed, at 37. Indiana University, Purdue University and Murray State were the only other tri-state schools ranked.
