Miami journalism students have produced a TV documentary-style program, "Bursting the Bubble: How Safe are We?," to examine issues of safety on and near Miami's Oxford campus. A free public screening will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, in the Williams Hall Television Studio.
Following the awareness created with the Virginia Tech killings and the deaths of five Miami students in the past two and a half years, "Bursting the Bubble" examines the current state of college safety says Joe Sampson, journalism instructor.
Wide-ranging in nature, the 30-minute program examines issues including the availability of student mental health services and the status of an untested emergency campus text messaging system.
The program also features coverage of a visit to Virginia Tech in October. Here, Miami journalism students report on how the Blacksburg campus is healing and what lessons from Virginia Tech can be applied in Oxford.
A question-and-answer session will follow the screening.
