NMR spectrometer dedicated

Eminent Scholar Michael Kennedy, Dean Karen Schilling, President David Hodge and Provost Jeffrey Herbst cut the ribbon on the new NMR facility
Miami officially opened its new nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer lab Nov. 14 with an academic symposium and ribbon-cutting. The 850 MHz NMR in the basement of Hughes Labs will be the nucleus for research collaborations uniting Michael Kennedy, Miami's Eminent Scholar in Structural Biology, with scientists at the children's hospitals in Cincinnati, Cleveland and Columbus. They will work to develop metabolic profiles and discover diagnostic markers of several children's diseases.

Kennedy also brings Miami into the nine-member Northeast Structural Genomics consortium (NESG), which will solve protein structures for the national Protein Structure Initiative.

"One of the goals of the eminent scholar program is not only to bring someone to campus so they can do good things, but to be a catalyst for things both on campus and outside campus," said Miami President David Hodge at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. "Michael Kennedy has created a consortium of three of the top 10 children's hospitals in the country to come together to work on the common issues of childhood diseases, their early detection, their profile, and the ability for us to be able to understand and detect these diseases much sooner than before."
