NSF grant awarded for chemistry scholarships

Chris Makaroff (chair, chemistry and biochemistry) is the recipient of a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for scholarships to recruit and retain undergraduate chemistry and biochemistry students. The five-year, $576,078 grant will help increase the number of professional chemists and biochemists, says Makaroff. Co-principal investigators include professors of chemistry and biochemistry Jerry Sarquis, Arlyne Sarquis and Stacey Lowery Bretz.

The grant will provide financial support for approximately 48 students with financial need who intend to make chemistry their career. Scholarships of up to $3,000 per year will be awarded to approximately 30 chemistry or biochemistry majors at Hamilton and Middletown campuses and students majoring in the two-year chemical technology program at Miami Middletown. Scholarships of up to $7,500 per year will be awarded to approximately 18 chemistry or biochemistry majors on the Oxford campus.

The scholarship program will provide opportunities for students to enhance their training, particularly in the areas of laboratory experiences and independent research projects, according to Makaroff.
