Lowery Bretz awarded $1.3M NSF grant
for chemistry doctoral fellows program

Stacey Lowery Bretz (chemistry and biochemistry) has been awarded a $1.3 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for a Chemistry Education Research (CER) Doctoral Fellows Program. The program will support five doctoral fellows each for five years.

The program provides a targeted response to the critical need for scholars with deep content knowledge in chemistry and the specialized training to conduct CER, says Lowery Bretz. Fellows admitted to the program will earn a Ph.D. in chemistry with specialization in CER and will receive a $30,000 annual stipend with tuition, fees and health insurance provided, a laptop computer and travel funds to two conferences per year.

In addition to preparing highly skilled CER scholars, the program will offer opportunities such as partnering with university and K-12 faculty to design chemistry classrooms and labs, professional mentoring into CER communities and professional development.
