1999 CROP Walk features walk in the woods

09/04/1999

The annual CROP Walk, a cooperative effort between Oxford residents and Miami University students, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12.

More than $6,000 is collected annually as pledges by those walking. One quarter of that amount stays with community agencies that meet the hunger needs of the local area. This year St. Vincent DePaul and Oxford Talawanda Community Services will benefit.

Money also is distributed in the United States and internationally to hunger and hunger-related efforts.

A new feature this year will be a 10-kilometer walk through Miami's Bachelor Estate woods. Paul Daniel, retired zoology professor, has helped to arrange and mark this new "trail" option.

Participants also may choose to follow the traditional in-town route. Both of the walk options begin and end at Millett Hall.

CROP Walk, begun nine years ago by Miami's Greek Week committee, is the

biggest cooperative event involving Miami students and Oxford townspeople.

The walk is named the L. Warren Nelson Memorial Walk in memory of Nelson, a retired professor who died in 1994 and who was committed to helping students, particularly those in fraternities and sororities, work for social justice.

Sign-up and pledge forms are available through Miami Service Network at

Shriver Center or at the Oxford Presbyterian Church.

For more information contact Greek Week committee members at 529-1462.
